treat having world-class charmer Isla Fisher ease us through the
film version of Sophie Kinsella's bestseller about — what
fashion junkie for the New Depression. She's Legally Broke. There's
even a debt collector on her tail. Those shopaholics from Sex
$20,000 in credit-card bills. She so wants to work at
Alette, the fashion mag of her dreams, run with an iron
hand and an outrageous French accent by Kristin Scott Thomas. But
the only job...
Oregon, let me say this: Director Henry Selick, the magic man
behind The Nightmare Before Christmas, did the dazzling
stop-motion animation. Neil Gaiman (Sandman), a rock star among
graphic novelists, wrote the story. And if that doesn't grab you,
think of what Japanese anime genius Hayao Miyazaki did with another
little-girl story in the Oscar-winning Spirited Away.
Coraline isn't in that class, but Selick and Gaiman will
take you — and Coraline — for a certified...
Starring: Liam Neeson, Famke Janssen
Director: Pierre Morel

Review :
What could be a skillful but ordinary action flick gets a surprising emotional heft from the presence of Liam Neeson as the hero. Bryan Mills (Neeson) has given up his career as a spy to form a relationship with his estranged teenage daughter--but when, on a trip to Paris, she's kidnapped by slavers, Mills uses all his connections and skills to turn the city of lights upside down and rescue her. Like most of the movies that writer/producer Luc Besson has a hand in (such as La Femme Nikita, The Transporter, Unleashed, and many other French action movies), Taken drips with lurid violence (a bit toned-down to get a PG-13 rating, but there's still plenty of it), deranged sentimentality, and stereotypes of all kinds. But this doesn't stop his movies from being effective thrill-rides, and Taken is no exception. Taken pays just enough attention to the illusion of procedure--making it seem like Mills knows all the right steps to track down his daughter--that the movie cheerfully seduces your suspension of disbelief, despite many plot holes and scenes where Mills doesn't get scratched despite bullets flying in all directions or pretends to be a French policeman despite not speaking French or even adopting a French accent. What holds it all together is Neeson; his gravitas and emotional availability make his character--the usual action fantasy of impossible competence and righteous fury--somehow seem real and relatable. --Bret Fetzer

What others are saying:

"This is one of those great action movies where the hero isn't burdened by doubt, ineptitude, or guilt. He knows what he has to do and he does it coolly and ruthlessly! What he does is kill bad guys... Lots and lots of bad guys of all nationalities, races, and creeds who deserve what they get. Very efficient and ecumenical...

I lost count, but Liam Neeson must have killed about 50 bad guys in this one. And they keep on spawning so he has more to kill. I haven't seen one hero take on so many bad guys who keep on reproducing since Steven Segal made "Hard to Kill"...

The action is non-stop and the retribution is very satisfying. There is a lot of violence, but this is not an explicit blood and gore film. Just good old Hollywood movie violence that hits you at the gut level. "Taken" is a nice vicarious vigilante thrill for all the rest of us who must play by the rules. Liam Neeson does an excellent job! Highly recommended for action fans... "

"I was skeptical when I heard that this movie would be produced by Luc Besson (The Professional, La Femme Nikita), the go to man or the French Joel Silver of action movies since some of his films have been hit and miss. This turns out to be a hit (it's already grossed $143 million thus far) thanks to the casting of Liam Neesom (Schindler's List; Rob Roy). A physically imposing actor of great presence, Neesom brings this physicality to the role of an retired CIA man brought back into action when his daughter is kidnapped in Paris. What ensues is 97 minutes of breakneck action and Neesom is totally convincing in this role. It may lack the complexity of the Bourne series but if you like your action movies to be lean and mean--this is the flick to see!!"

Wasn't it bad enough the first time (back in 2006) gaping at
Steve Martin trying to clone the stumbling gait and terrible French
accent of the great Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau? There has
to be a sequel? Except for the unholy god of box office, there is
no reason to do it again. Martin is a gifted physical comic. He
deserves an original role tailored to his own talents. Watching
something this borrowed just makes me blue.
Are women desperate or just desperately stupid? This is the
You, a women-bashing tract disguised as a chick flick. I mean
really, will women actually line up this weekend to see themselves
treated as pawns in a man's stupid game? I hope not. This toxic
wisp of a movie is based on a toxic wisp of a book by Greg Behrendt
and Liz Tuccillo that was itself based on a toxic wisp of a
throwaway line they wrote for TV's Sex and the City. Be
careful — the movie attempts to look harmless. Check out the
film's narrator Gigi, played by too-smart-for-the-part Ginnifer
Goodwin, who is so good on HBO's Big Love. There's perky
Gigi mooning over a decidedly uninterested real-estate tool named
Conor (Kevin Connolly) while taking...
